The 1619 Project
The 1619 Project was introduced by the New York Times Magazine in 2019 for the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. This particular issue is dedicated to retelling history to acknowledge the first time enslaved Africans stepped foot on “American” soil in Jamestown, Virginia. The legacy we all know was built through generations of racial oppression that led to social structures normalizing the behaviors of anti-black racism. This ideology continues to manifest in modern laws, policies, cultures and systems.
The button below leads to New York Times presentation on reframing the story of what truly occurred with the first landing of pilgrims in Jamestown, Virginia. This piece is richly detailed and informative on the cause and effects of how slavery transformed the society we know to what is rooted in racism.
